The Star Wars Sequels have mainly been received negatively. Several plot holes, dissimilar Star Wars themes and its main destruction coming from not having an overall plan from the beginning.
The Mandalorian was a fresh start for Star Wars in many different ways. Not only bringing in a massive part of the Star Wars universe only ever seen in the Clone Wars to Live Action. But also being able to bring new and old audience members back to Star Wars. The show ties in nicely with the several other shows whose stories overlap, while also giving an explanation into what happened after the fall of the Death Star.
For long-time fans who watched the Clone Wars it was amazing to finally see a kickass Mandalorian absolutely destroying fools like he should be. As the most war history rich race in Star Wars it was awesome to see the fighting styles and equipment perfected from countless battles. Even for more casual viewers, who enjoyed the original films, they should be able to enjoy the show as it ties in some ideas from the original films. With the defeated stormtrooper helmets around, old scuffed armour worn by the troopers and how limited their numbers are. Quite clearly shows that the Empire has really fallen from its position of overruling power from The Return of the Jedi. I think this helps give perspective of what the galaxy has fallen into this weird era of New Republic.
The Mandalorians have a rich fighting history full of betrayals and war, up to the massive Purge killing most of the Mandalorian's population. This is seen through representation of how the Mandalorians react to threats said from the imperials encountered in the show. I think showing these small numbers for the older fans means a lot as you can clearly see how they have been basically wiped out. Even if you don’t know the history, seeing how they react to the word purge signifies to a larger backstory with emotional ties of loss.
Building the show up from other storylines and tying it in with the universe helps it feel a lot more natural. By bringing in Ahsoka ties in perfectly with the Clone Wars, and Rebels timeline as well, hopefully the Ahsoka series still yet to come. This connects nicely with the prequel fandom, while the older aesthetic and remnants of the Empire ties in with the original fandom.
I think these combined elements of rich law, mutual original and prequel themes, and tying them all to one large web of interconnecting shows; Makes the show far more authentic and natural than any of the sequel movies. These are only some of the larger elements which make it great as there are still several others I haven’t even touched on.
